History
Founder Carolyn Bess was convinced of the transformative power of the outdoors after an amazing journey on the Appalachian Trail in 1991. She decided that such an experience was basic to the human spirit and became determined to provide others with a similar opportunity. While working at a shared living community, Carolyn organized a backpacking excursion to the Berkshire Mountains with ten people of all abilities. The trip was a success, having a lasting impact on everyone involved. As the demand for additional trips grew, Outdoor Explorations was born. Now, more than fifteen years later, Outdoor Explorations has grown into a vibrant community of more than 2,000 participants and 60 field volunteers.

Breaking Down Barriers to Adventure
"The best part was seeing the clients with physical disabilities or fear of heights make the effort to climb the walls. People who never thought they could do this had the opportunity to be proud of themselves."
-Joe Breen, HICS recreation program coordinator (Climb and Dine 3.14.08)
